Björk's tenth studio album, Fossora, takes listeners on an emotional journey of isolation, loss, and grief. The album was recorded during the pandemic and centers around the death of Björk's mother, Hildur Runa Hauksdóttir, in 2018. The album debuted at number 11 on the UK Albums Chart and number 100 on the US Billboard 200. Fossora earned Björk her ninth consecutive Best Alternative Music Album nomination at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards.
The album features contributions from various artists, including American singer Serpentwithfeet, Indonesian dance duo Gabber Modus Operandi, and bass clarinet sextet Murmuri. Fossora's title, an ungrammatical feminine version of the Latin word for "digger," reflects its themes of digging into grief and loss. The album's sound draws on Iceland's choral and folk traditions, featuring strings programmed at Björk's local coffee shop. Fungus is a metaphor for the album's survival, death, and ecological meditation themes. Fossora stands in contrast to Björk's previous album, Utopia, with the latter being a "skybound haven" and the former marking her return to Earth.
