When The Clash started working on a new album after their ambitious triple album Sandinista!, they were going through a tough time. Joe Strummer and Mick Jones were barely on speaking terms, Topper Headon was struggling with addiction, and their record label was pressuring them to produce a hit. The tension and lack of communication between the band members became so bad that they ended up recording separately in different studios. Despite the challenges, they drew inspiration from their early interests in punk, rock & roll, and dub music, and incorporated new elements like rap, spoken word (featuring Allen Ginsberg), world music, and disco, all of which ultimately culminated in their album, Combat Rock.
